One half of the songwriting-performing-producing entity formerly known as Ashford and Simpson, R&B legend Valerie Simpson defined an era of soul music like no other. Teaming with her late husband, Nick Ashford, the duo has written, produced, and performed hits with Marvin Gaye, Diana Ross, and Tammi Terrell to name a few. The iconic duo is responsible for hits like Marvin Gaye’s, “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough,” Chaka Khan’s, “I’m Every Woman,” and their very own single, “Solid,” which peaked at number twelve on the US Billboard Hot 100. In 2002, the duo was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame.
Today, Valerie serves on the board of the ASCAP Foundation, where the Reach Out and Touch Award was established to aid struggling songwriters to honor her late husband. This year, Valerie has toured with Dave Koz and has appeared as a special guest with Paul Shaffer and the World’s Most Dangerous Band. In addition, Valerie recently took on the role of Mama Morton in New York’s Chicago, The Musical, adding an exciting new role to her diversified career.
