The two best ways to reach your elected official are writing to them through email or regular mail. Although the most natural way most of us communicate is email, the printed word remains the most powerful way to communicate with your elected officials.
No matter how you choose, the most difficult step is figuring out what to say. To this end, here are a few pointers to get you started. Send

Introduce YourselfAre you a constituent? Are you a registered voter? Are you active in the district or community? These are important pieces of information that the staff member (let's be honest here, a couple of staffers are going to read your letter before it gets remotely close to the politician's desk) needs to know.
Be Specific & Marshall FactsThe more specific you can be, the more persuasive the letter will be. Present a clear, concise argument backed up with facts and you'll be taken seriously. Personal stories and experiences are always effective. Try to avoid copying and pasting form letters.
Be Exceedingly PoliteEveryone has an ego. Don't insult or employ ad hominem arguments - remember your mom's advice and be nice. You're trying to win them over to your point of view not alienate them.
